History

The George Jr. and Lucia Curtis house was built in 1906 and is the work of Lew F. Porter, the architect who was involved in several notable structures in Madison, Wisconsin, including the Camp Randall Arch, the UW-Madison boathouse and Old Red Gym, the Senate Tavern, and the Ag Dean’s residence. Perhaps, his most prestigious accomplishment was his role as Superintendent of Construction in constructing the Wisconsin State Capitol Building. The home was quite prestigious in its day, with its hilltop view of Lake Wingra. The decorative arches, paneled windows, ornate interior trim, and saw-tooth shingles all speak to its historical reverence. Additional historical elements include the 1/4″ thick glass paneled windows, internal plaster walls (for insulation), and double chambered cistern that was used for water filtration.
